Ontario Secondary School Course Codes are set by the Ontario Ministry of Eduction and can be quite confusing. Here is a quick guide to how they work using a sample of:

MFM = M – “Mathematics” (subject), FM – “Foundations of Mathematics”(course title)
The fourth character indicates the grade:

1 = Grade 9      2 = Grade 10    3 = Grade 11    4 = Grade 12
The fifth letter indicates the level of study:

Grades 9 and 10  Grades 11 and 12 Grades 9-12
 D = Academic  U = University  O = Open level
 P = Applied  C = College
 L = Locally Developed  M = University/College
 E = Workplace
